When You Have No Skills, No Education, No Time

By Marty Nemko

To find short programs that prepare you for in-demand careers, scan community college and university extension catalogs. Or visit the local branch of the state unemployment office or vocational rehabilitation office. To identify under-the-radar career ideas, scan the index of your Yellow Pages, pick out the career that most excites you--car radiator repair anyone?--call listings under that category and ask how you could train for that career--often it's on the job. Short career training programs are also offered through Regional Occupational Programs and Adult Schools. To find out about these call your local school district office.
