Contact Employers Even If They Aren't Advertising Job Openings

By Marty Nemko

This is how I'd try to land a job: 1. Identify dream employers by asking colleagues and reading trade publications. 2. Get them to like you: Send desired bosses a letter telling your human story and what you bring to the table. Follow-up with a phone call. If a job isn't available, don't give up. Ask the hirer to keep you in mind. Say that if you're still looking, in a month you'll phone to follow up. 3. If things go right, a dream employer creates a position for you or gives you the inside track when a job becomes available.

What can you do today?
Who's your dream employer. Make a contact there.
