Create Your Personal Mission Statement

By Marty Nemko

Recently, I wrote a worklife mission statement--one sentence that summarizes what I most want to accomplish in my worklife: "Use my communication skills to provide workers with use-it-now advice and to promote my belief that a college education is America's most overrated product." Writing that mission statement has helped me sort out what tasks I must do, might do, and can forego. That has saved me time and added meaning to the tasks I do do. It feels good to have a mission statement--it's a standard to measure my actions against.

What can you do today?
Write a draft of your worklife mission statement.
