Metaphors to Ease Your Job Search

By Marty Nemko

Some job searchers have been helped by these metaphors:

  • A job search is like a trip to the mall: You try stuff on, and if you're patient, you find something worth buying.
  • A job search is like a treasure hunt: You dig around and even if it takes time to find the treasure, the process itself is fun.
  • When you contact someone and it proves useless, think of it as a library book that turned out not to be helpful. No emotion expended, no sense of rejection, you just put it back on the shelf and try another book.
