Responding Wisely to a Job Ad

By Marty Nemko

Most job applications are first screened to ensure that the candidate meets the basic requirements. To ensure your application passes, include a chart in your cover letter. On the left side, list the job requirements stated in the ad; on the right side, explain how you've met the requirement. If asked for your salary requirement, respond, "$XX,000-YY,000 (a $5-10,000 range), depending on the scope of responsibilities." Include a work sample: If you're a teacher, send a video of you in action. A programmer? Send a disk. A manager, your performance review. Don't just tell 'em, show 'em.
