Should Your Boss Pay You to Nap?

By Marty Nemko

Guess what these people have in common: John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Johannes Brahms, and Napoleon Bonaparte? They all took naps. Recent research by NASA suggests that napping may actually make you more effective on the job. Pilots allowed a 40-minute snooze on a nine-hour flight were 100 percent more alert and formed tasks 34 percent better in the critical 90 final minutes. Anecdotally, many people report that a 20-minute mid-afternoon nap makes them function much better for the rest of the afternoon.

What could you do today?
Show this "Fast Fix" to your boss. Ask if your boss might set aside a small area for napping or allow napping at the desk. It may increase productivity and certainly produce some thankful employees.
