What to Ask in an Informational Interview

By Marty Nemko

Interviewing people about their career can help you pick a well-suited one--especially if you ask the right questions. Here are my favorites: How'd you get into this career? Walk me through a typical day. What's best and worst about the career? What's key to succeeding in it? Anything I should know about this field that's unlikely to appear in print? What's the smartest way to prepare for this career? How's the field changing? Why might someone leave it? Anyone else I should talk with? Anything I should read? Meetings I should attend? Websites I should visit? Ask and ye shall receive.
